Multiple Hudson Valley Stores Closing, Many Likely Laid Off
Multiple department stores will be closed by the end of the year, likely laying off a number of Hudson Valley residents around the holidays.
On Monday, Sears Holdings Corporation announced the rumors were true and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
The century-old company filed for Chapter 11 protection to reorganize, in hopes it can find ways to survive. The company also announced plans to close 142 unprofitable stores near the end of 2018.
Late Monday, we learned which stores will be shutting down and they include three from the Hudson Valley.
The Kmart in Mahopac and Sears in Nanuet and Yorktown Heights will shut down for good by the end of 2018, USA Today reports.
It's unclear what will happen to employees at those locations, but 71 employees at the Poughkeepsie Kmart will be out of work by Dec. 23.
For now, the Poughkeepsie and Newburgh Sears will remain open. The company recently closed its Middletown and Kingston locations.
Sears Holdings Corporation which also owns Kmart has Kmart locations in Yorktown Heights and White Plains. The New Windsor Kmart recently closed.
Liquidation sales at the closing stores will begin soon, the company said.
