Police: Hudson Valley Teen Assaulted Infant Son
A Hudson Valley teen is accused of seriously injuring his 7-month old baby. On Wednesday, New York State Police at Kingston arrested 19-year-old Ernest G. Williams III of the Town of Olive for second-degree assault.
On Tuesday, State Police and EMS responded to a 911 call placed by Williams reporting his 7-month-old child semi-conscious at his home in the Town of Olive.
The child, who was in the care of Williams, was transported by ambulance to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston and later flown to Westchester Medical Center in serious condition where he underwent surgery for injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, police say.
Shaken baby syndrome is a serious brain injury resulting from forcefully shaking an infant or toddler, which destroys a child's brain cells and prevents his or her brain from getting enough oxygen, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Shaken baby syndrome can result in permanent brain damage or death, officials say.
Williams was arraigned in the Town of Olive Court and remanded to Ulster County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
