Gov. Cuomo is expected to sign a bill which would make revenge porn illegal across New York State.

On Thursday, New York lawmakers passed legislation which would criminalize porn in New York, joining 41 other states, NBC reports. The new bill, which is supported by Gov. Cuomo, would make it a misdemeanor to send or post explicit photos of a person without their consent and allow victims to file lawsuits against the person responsible.

"For years I have called for outlawing revenge porn as part of our fight to combat sexual violence in all its forms. This disgusting and insidious behavior, which can follow victims around their entire lives, has no place in New York," Cuomo said in a statement. "I commend the legislature for embracing this proposal, which is a key part of our Women's Agenda, and empowering victims of this heinous crime to take action. In New York, we will never stop fighting to protect and strengthen women's rights and opportunity."

The explicit photos are often sent privately between two people when they are dating but then get sent out as an act of revenge when the relationship ends, officials say.

A person found guilty of revenge porn could receive up to one year in jail, under the proposed bill.
