Neighbor: Teacher Found Dead in Hudson Valley ‘Wasn’t Himself’
The neighbor of the teacher who was found dead in the Hudson Valley said the teacher wasn't acting like himself before his fatal hiking trip.
On Saturday, Shandaken Police found a vehicle at a trailhead in Woodland Valley that belonged to a reported missing 46-year-old man from Queens.
Hikers reported to police that a man matching the Queens man's description was seen at the Terrace Lean-to. Two forest rangers hiked to the lean-to and found the Keith Johnson in severe hypothermia, according to the DEC.
Efforts began to move him out of the woods, but the man lost consciousness. Johnson didn't respond to rescue breathing and died at the scene, the DEC confirmed in a press release on Monday.
Johnson’s neighbor told reporters Johnson wasn’t himself prior to his fatal hiking trip.
"He told me he was going camping," Ken Achan told the New York Daily News. “He seemed kind of off. I didn't see any camping equipment on him. He looked a little upset. He wasn't himself."
The death is still being investigated, but police claim nothing seems suspicious.
Johnson was a music teacher at PS 29 in Queens.
