You may soon be able to buy alcohol later in the evening in Dutchess County.

On Monday, the Dutchess County Legislature voted 19-5 to expand the hours of the sale of wine and liquor in the county, overriding the veto of County Executive Marc Molinaro.

The request will now go to the State Liquor Authority who will hold a public hearing and make the final decision.

In April, the Dutchess County Legislature passed a request, 18-6, to extend liquor and wine sale hours after hearing from store owners and constituents on both sides of the issue, officials say.

Shortly after, Molinaro vetoed the measure so there would be more time for public input.

"There were many people, including local liquor stores and municipal leaders, who were unaware this resolution was even being considered and then read about it in the media once it was done. There is clearly support for this change, but it is important that we provide the opportunity for all voices to be heard," Molinaro said after his veto.

Molinaro added he expected the veto override would be successful.

"I expect the veto override will be successful and we can move forward with a change to liquor store hours that will level the regional playing field for these Dutchess County businesses," Molinaro said in April.

The current law, which officials say are the most restrictive in the state, allows liquor and wine sales from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays, and from noon until 9 p.m. on Sundays.

Under the proposed resolution, weekday and Saturday sales will be extended by two hours, until 9 p.m.

Holiday sales, which are currently restricted to one hour, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on New Year's, Thanksgiving, Memorial, Independence and Labor Day, will be updated to be the same as those allowed on weekdays and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
