Tappan Zee Bridge Demolition Postponed Indefinitely
Parts of the Tappan Zee Bridge were supposed to be demolished by explosives this weekend, but those plans have been postponed indefinitely.
Weather permitting, the east side of the Tappan Zee Bridge, which connects Rockland and Westchester counties, was scheduled to be demolished with explosives on Saturday around 9:30 a.m.
Sunday was planned as a makeup date. But, officials announced on Thursday that weather and safety concerns forced the postponement of the demolition.
“Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) has postponed Saturday’s controlled demolition of the old Tappan Zee Bridge’s east anchor span due to inclement weather. The sustained winds caused delays to the preparatory work of the planned demolition operation. We appreciate the patience of the local community, and once we have rescheduled the operation we will provide an update," Tappan Zee Constructors said in a statement.
Businesses near the bridge that planned to host watch parties have been forced to cancel their plans.
Another date for the demolition has yet to be determined.
