Officers Save Injured Hawk in the Hudson Valley

An injured hawk was saved thanks to a Hudson Valley homeowner and officials.

On Jan. 20, an officer from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to a report of injured Red-Tailed Hawk in Wawarsing, the DEC announced in a press release on Wednesday.

The hawk was last been seen by a homeowner on his woodpile and appeared to have an injured wing.

The hawk demonstrated uncharacteristic behavior when it didn't attempt to fly when the homeowner approached to investigate, officials say.

A wildlife rehabilitator assisted at the scene, but when the officer and the rehabilitator arrived at the home, the hawk had moved to a nearby tree. The hawk hopped further out on a branch and then fell to the ground, according to the DEC.

The injured bird was eventually captured and transported it to another wildlife rehabilitator who specializes in treating injured raptors.
