Hudson Valley Man is 200th FDNY To Die of 9/11-Related Illness

A Vietnam veteran from the Hudson Valley is the 200th FDNY hero to die from a 9-11 related illness.

FDNY Firefighter Richard Driscoll of Monroe will be laid to rest Wednesday morning after he passed away last Wednesday at the age of 73, following a lengthy battle with a 9-11 related illness.

He's the 200th FDNY member to die of World Trade Center illness, according to the FDNY. He bravely responded to the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and worked tirelessly in the rescue and recovery efforts that followed, officials say.

“It is almost incomprehensible that after losing 343 members on September 11, we have now had 200 more FDNY members die due to World Trade Center illness. These heroes gave their lives bravely fighting to rescue and recover others. We will never forget them," FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.

Driscoll served for the US Army in the Vietnam War and was cited for bravery five times during his FDNY career. He retired from the FDNY in 2002 after serving for 32 years.

In the Hudson Valley, he was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Monroe, The Orange County Retired Fire Fighters Association, The Knights of Columbus Council in Washingtonville and the American Legion Post #488, in Monroe, according to his obituary.
