Smoking Age Likely to Increase in New York
The smoking age may soon be raised across New York State
On Wednesday, the New York Assembly approved a measure which would raise New York State's legal smoking age from 18 to 21. The legislation would ban the sale of cigarettes and e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21.
The bill passed in the Democrat-led Assembly and now needs to be approved by the Democrat-controlled New York state Senate. Democratic Gov. Anew Cuomo supports the policy change.
It's already illegal to sell cigarettes to minors in many New York counties, including Orange, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester.
Julie Hart of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network tells the Associated Press the measure is "common sense" and will decrease the number of young people who become addicted to cigarettes.
