A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Orange, Putnam, Westchester and Rockland counties starting at noon on Thursday and lasting until 6 a.m. Friday.

Tropical moisture surging from North Carolina and Virginia will move up into the area this afternoon and tonight. Repeated bands of showers and isolated thunderstorms, capable of heavy downpours, is expected, At times it could rain up to one inch per hour.

Over an inch to 4 inches of rain is expected. The rain will result in ponding of water in urban, poor drainage and low lying areas. If repeated rounds of heavy rainfall occur over the same areas, flash flooding is possible, the National Weather Service reports.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may cause flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation, officials say.
