Cuomo Responds to Trump's 'Attack' on New York's Abortion Bill

Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a response after "President Trump attacked New York's law protecting women's reproductive rights."

Last month, Cuomo signed a "historic" abortion rights bill after it was approved overwhelmingly by state lawmakers. The Reproductive Health Act amends the public health law, removes restrictions on abortions after 24 weeks if it protects the woman's health or if a fetus isn't viable, decriminalizes access to abortions and protects doctors who perform them.

The act codifies the protections of Roe v. Wade into law in New York State.

During Tuesday's State of the Union Address, President Donald Trump ripped New York's abortion rights bill.

“Lawmakers in New York cheered with delight upon the passage of legislation that would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother’s womb moments before birth," Trump said. "These are living, feeling, beautiful babies who will never get the chance to share their love and dreams with the world."

It marked the first time Trump talked about abortion in an address to Congress, USA Today reports.

Following the State of the Union address, Gov. Cuomo issued a statement after "President Trump attacked New York's law protecting women's reproductive rights and proposed outlawing protections provided by Roe v. Wade during his State of the Union speech."

"Tonight President Trump proposed rolling back the protections provided by Roe v. Wade — the law of our nation for 46 years affirmed and reaffirmed by numerous Supreme Courts," Cuomo said in a statement. "Never. New York has a message to those who spread lies and fear to control women's reproductive health decisions: Not going to happen. Not now, not ever."
