World Series MVP Engaged to Hudson Valley Woman
A woman from the Hudson Valley is engaged to the 2017 World Series MVP.
In December of 2016, Houston Astros Outfielder George Springer popped the question to his girlfriend, Charlise Castro of Saugerties.
“Filled with inexplicable happiness and unconditional love because I am marrying my best friend,” Castro wrote on Facebook after getting engaged. “I absolutely cannot wait to call you my husband!!!!”
Castro is from Saugerties and attended Kingston High School. She was a three-sport varsity star for Kingston, playing softball, basketball and volleyball.
“Hardworking parents who refused to let me settle for anything less than my best raised me,” Castro wrote on her personal website. “In the midst of juggling school, work and sports, it all paid off when I received a Division I scholarship.”
That Division 1 scholarship came from the University Maryland Eastern Shore. After being named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year she then transferred to U-Albany.
After excelling on the field for the Great Danes, Castro played for the Puerto Rico Olympic team and played internationally. While playing international softball, Castro met Springer.
"We actually met when I played international softball. We had the same interests, so we hit it off right from the start,” Castro told FHM.
Castro says after playing internationally she was offered opportunities to continue her professional career but her passion for health and fitness steered her away from the diamond.
Castro received a masters degree in Business Administration from the College of Saint Rose, also in Albany. She now works as a personal trainer and runs her own fitness blog/website.
Castro and Springer plan to get married on January 20, 2018.
