A Newburgh man is in jail without bail for allegedly possessing two illegal guns and drugs.

On Thursday, deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested 24-year-old Tyrek Jones of Newburgh after police allegedly found two illegal handguns in his car.

During a traffic stop near Benkard Avenue in the City of Newburgh, authorities allege they smelled marijuana coming from inside the car. The driver, Jones, admitted to smoking in the car, police say.

A search of his car led to the discovery of cocaine in the driver’s door and two handguns in the trunk, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

One of the guns was loaded and both had their serial numbers removed, officials say.

Jones was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, willful defacement of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, all felonies; and unlawful possession of marijuana and driving with no headlamps, violations.

Jones was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.
