Police say a man who knew he was wanted in Colorado called 911 to avoid being arrested in the Hudson Valley.

On Friday around 1:50 a.m., Saugerties police conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on a 2009 Toyota, operated by a 23-year-old woman, at the intersection of State Route 9w and Glasco Turnpike.

The front-seat passenger was identified as 30-year-old Aaron Chadwick of Woodstock. When conducting a file check on both, officers learned Chadwick was a Wanted Fugitive From Justice by the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado Springs, police say.

While confirming with the El Paso Sheriff’s Office that they wanted to extradite Chadwick police received a 911 call from a person who reported they had just been robbed and assaulted near where the car was pulled over.

Police were suspicious about the 911 call because the caller ID identified the call as coming to form a cell phone owned by Aaron Chadwick, officials say.

Officer’s arrested Chadwick on the Felony Fugitive Warrant and also charged him with falsely reporting an incident.

According to police, Chadwick told officers he knew he was wanted in Colorado and made the 911 call in a desperate attempt to avoid being arrested, hoping officers would abandon the vehicle and traffic stop to respond to the robbery assault call.

Chadwick was arraigned in the Town of Saugerties Justice Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail without bail.
