The beloved owner of a popular Hudson Valley restaurant, where Billy Joel dined at this summer, suddenly passed away.

John Ambrose, 65, of Rye died unexpectedly on Monday, just one week shy of his 66th birthday, according to this his obituary.

For the last 40 years, John owned and operated a number of restaurants in the lower Hudson Valley, the Crab Shanty Restaurant in Mamaroneck, Seaside Johnnie's in Rye and currently the Pier Restaurant and Tiki Bar in Rye.

"It is with a heavy heart that we share news of the passing of our beloved John Ambrose, the heart and soul of the Pier Restaurant & Tiki Bar," the restaurant wrote on Facebook. "He will be missed beyond words and we will continue to keep his memory and mission alive of 'Everyone goes home happy' for years to come."

Out of respect to John, the Pier Restaurant & Tiki Bar will remain closed until Friday. On Friday, the eatery will reopen for the final weekend of the season.

"John’s vibrant spirit, big smile, quick wit and warm embrace touched the lives of all those who knew him, whether it was for 45 years or 5 minutes," the restaurant said. "To John, may it forever be “Tiki Time” in heaven. Your memory will live our hearts always and your presence felt on the boardwalk in the warm summer breeze."

John will also be remembered for his tropical Tiki outfits and his passion for the New York Yankees and Cleveland Browns. The Browns beat the New York Jets the day John passed away, "in his honor," according to his obituary.

This summer, Billy Joel parked his boat and then enjoyed a meal at the Pier Restaurant and Tiki Bar.
