The Ulster County Sheriff's Department is looking for the public's help regarding a hit-and-run fatality that happened in the Town of New Paltz apparently on Wednesday, January 23rd, 2024. A pedestrian was struck by a car on Route 208 at approximately 5:11 PM on Tuesday but was not discovered until Wednesday, January 24th.

Sadly the pedestrian who was killed has been identified as 22-year-old Raymond E. Rattray of New York, New York. Rattray was discovered deceased in a wooded area approximately 20 feet from the road. It is believed he was stuck on the southbound side of Route 208 while walking home from class on Tuesday evening. Rattray was a student at SUNY New Paltz.

Route 208 in New Paltz, New York was closed for hours on Wednesday, January 24th, 2024 due to an accident investigation involving a pedestrian being struck by a car. State Route 208 was closed between Hawk Drive and Cross Creek Road while the police investigated the hit-and-run which resulted in the death of Raymond E. Rattray.

Route 208 was closed most of the day while law enforcement investigated the fatal car versus pedestrian accident. It is believed that Rattray was struck by a dark-colored sedan traveling south on Route 208.

Ulster County Sheriff's Department Looking For Dark Sedan with Damage

The Ulster County Sheriff's Office shared this information in a press release late on Wednesday but did not say how they were able to describe the car. They also added that the car fled the scene but had sustained damage to the front passenger side.

Classmates Remember SUNY Student Killed in Hit and Run in New Paltz, New York

As you might imagine the news has reached Rattray's friends at the college and they are all stunned and saddened by his death. They are calling for the person responsible to come forward, remembering Ratrray as an intriguing and genuine guy, also called original and eccentric.

SUNY New Paltz President Darrell P. Wheeler has released a statement expressing the University's deepest sympathies to Raymond's family, friends, and faculty and staff who knew him. The statement also mentioned that the Counseling Center is available at (845) 257-2920 for students. Employees are encouraged to use the Employee Assistance Program at (845) 257-2886.

According to the statement released by President Wheeler, Raymond Rattray was a senior philosophy major in the Education Opportunities Program and a member of the Men's Rugby Club.
