Hudson Valley Teen Continues to Fight For Life From Flu
A Hudson Valley teen, a volunteer firefighter, continues to fight for his life as he battles severe complications from a nasty case of the flu.
As we previously reported, Willy McCue, 19, is in the intensive care unit at Montefiore Hospital due to secondary complications from the flu.
Updates about his condition have been sparse, until Sunday afternoon.
In a Facebook post, the New City Fire Department wrote that McCue’s family feels, “it is time to let people know just how hard a battle Will is continuing to fight.”
“Originally suffering from the flu, he developed serious complications as he got sicker and sicker. The flu caused pneumonia, and that further caused issues with sepsis throughout his body. As his condition worsened, doctors were forced to take action to save Will’s life,” the fire department wrote.
As McCue’s condition got worse the New City Fire Department probationary firefighter had several surgeries resulting in the amputation of one hand at the wrist, his fingers, below the knuckle on his other hand, and both feet.
The Clarkstown North High School graduate is also suffering from severe tissue damage to one leg and organ issues, according to the New City Fire Department.
However, Will is showing many signs of improvement.
“He is conscious and aware of what’s happening. He is no longer on continual dialysis, and has been removed from his ventilator completely,” the fire department wrote.
The fire department plans to hold several fundraisers in the future, including one in April. Details weren’t announced.
A GoFundMe page was set up to help McCue’s family with the extensive medical costs. As of this writing, nearly $58,000 has been donated.
