Explosives Might Be Used to Bring Down Tappan Zee Bridge

Officials from New York are considering using explosives to bring down the Tappan Zee Bridge.

The steel of the 63-year-old bridge began to spark safety concerns after a loud popping sound was heard from the bridge. The concerns caused a delayed opening for parts of the Tappan Zee Bridge's replacement, the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

Now, officials are thinking of using explosives to bring down the Tappan Zee Bridge.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Federal Highway Administration submitted plans to bring down the bridge with explosives or other methods. A decision is expected soon.

“I think at some point in the project everybody realized they were going to have to do some form of controlled demolition," Doug Hecox, a spokesman at the Federal Highway Administration, told the Wall Street Journal.

Explosives have been used to destroy other old bridges in New York.
