Cuomo Wants to Connect Hudson Valley to L.I. With Bridge, Tunnel

Gov. Cuomo hopes to build a bridge or tunnel that will connect the Hudson Valley to Long Island.

In Jan., in his State of the State address, Gov. Cuomo endorsed the $55 billion project which would connect Westchester County to Nassau County with either a bridge or tunnel.

While some love the idea and assume it will make driving to and from Long Island headache and traffic free, others are against it.

Environmentalists and residents are concerned about the quality of suburban life being disturbed. A campaign started Wednesday to stop a tunnel or bridge, CBS reports.

Those against the bridge or tunnel got their wish. On Thursday, the acting commissioner of the state Transportation Department said the project will not be moving forward, Newsday reports.

“After careful review of a variety of considerations pertaining to the project, NYSDOT has decided not to move forward with it at this time,” Paul Karas said in a statement obtained by Newsday.

Karas didn't go into detail on why the project was dropped. Ideas of a bridge or tunnel connecting the Hudson Valley to Long Island date back 80 years.

The state spent $5 million on a study about the bridge or tunnel, according to CBS.
