Hudson Valley Restaurant Among Best in America

A brand-new restaurant in the Hudson Valley has been named one of the best in the country.

On Wednesday, Esquire released their 2018 list of the 20 best new restaurants in America.

The Filipino spot Karenderya on Main Street in Nyack placed 19th.

"We are in ABSOLUTE AWE that our little casual spot has been named one of Esquire's Best New Restaurants in America in 2018," the restaurant wrote on Facebook after learning about the honor. "The gratification we get when people come and enjoy our food and have a great experience was already more than we ever could have asked for. But, THIS? We are grateful and humbled."

The restaurant offers Filipino and other Asian-inspired dishes, according to its website.

Esquire highlight the Filipino restaurant's pork belly, shrimp aswim, jackfruit cake and beer list which features beers from Hudson Valley breweries.

In the future, we pray, thousands of small towns in America will have Filipino restaurants as excellent as this one, with adobo pork belly braised to crispy meltiness atop garlic rice, and shrimp aswim in a coconut broth that tastes like French cream, and a cassava-jackfruit cake that comes across like a cobbler in which the topping and the filling have magically merged, and a smart beer list that highlights the best of Hudson Valley breweries. For now, Karenderya serves as exciting evidence that the #filipinofoodmovement is making inroads in suburbia, thanks to co-owners Cheryl Baun (the cake is her mother’s recipe) and chef Paolo Garcia Mendoza, a veteran of Tabla in Manhattan. Theirs is a warm, family-friendly enclave, and if you visit, you’re going to wind up wishing it were a block away from your house.

Co-owner Cheryl Baub is a Hudson Valley native with a passion for food. Head chef and co-owner Paolo Mendoza grew up in the Philippines, according to the restaurant's website. He moved to Rockland County in 2010.
