A fatal accident caused parts of a major road to close during rush hour in the Hudson Valley.

On Thursday around 6:30 a.m, New York State Police from the Poughkeepsie barracks began investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred on State Route 55 in the town of Lagrange.

According to police, a 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle driving at a high rate of speed nailed a 2017 GMC Acadia heading east on State Route 55 near Noxon Road.

The motorcycle operator, 25-year-old Kevin A. Sheehan from Poughkeepsie, was thrown from his bike. Responding troopers began life-saving efforts until members from the Lagrange Fire Department members took over.

Sheehan was transported to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased by the on-duty emergency room physician, police say.

The accident closed a portion of Route 55 during Thursday morning's commute, causing serious backups.

State Police were assisted on scene by the Troop K Collision Reconstruction Unit, Dutchess County Sherriff’s Office, Lagrange Fire Department, and the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office.
