Hudson Valley Hospital Worker Sexually Abused Patient
A Hudson Valley hospital worker was found guilty of sexually abusing a patient.
On Monday, a jury trial found 57-year-old Nathan Oglesby of Wallkill guilty of criminal sexual act and sexual abuse for having sexual contact with an inpatient of a residential facility where he was employed, and which is operated, licensed and certified by the New York State Office of Mental Health.
During the trial, prosecutors argued Oglesby, who worked as a treatment aide in the facility, had sexual contact with the female inpatient.
Under New York State law a resident or inpatient of such a facility is deemed incapable of consenting to sexual contact with facility staff members, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
The jury found that although Oglesby didn't force the woman into sexual acts, he did commit crimes of a criminal sexual act and sexual abuse.
“We cannot allow those who need and seek treatment to be victimized by those who are charged with caring for them,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “We will be seeking the maximum sentence permissible for this defendant, who abused his position of trust to take advantage of a hospital patient when they were most vulnerable.”
He faces up to four years in prison when sentenced in early 2019.
