Hudson Valley Grammy Winning Artist Jailed
A Grammy winner from the Hudson Valley is heading to jail for not paying nearly $2 million in taxes.
On Wednesday, Earl Simmons, 47, from Yonkers was sentenced to one year in prison for tax fraud.
In Nov. 2017, Simmions, who's better known by his rap name, DMX, pleaded guilty to tax evasion. He admitted he avoided paying $1.7 million in taxes.
Prior to the sentencing, the judge allowed DMX's song "Slippin" to be played for the court. His attorney, Murray Richman, requested he play DMX’s music at the sentencing because the rapper would likely be too emotional to speak.
Richman believed the music would help the court understand DMX, “genuinely in his voice”, according to court documents.
Lyrics in “Slippin” include, “I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up."
In Jan, DMX's bail was revoked for violating probation for allegedly failing a drug test.
In February 2016, police from the Hudson Valley saved DMX’s life after he was found lifeless from an apparent drug overdose outside a Yonkers hotel.
In addition to his prison sentence, DMX was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay $2,292,200 in restitution to the IRS.
