A mother and her four kids were hit by an SUV while crossing the street in the Hudson Valley. The mother and her infant child were killed.
On Sunday around 8:40 p.m., New York State Police from Wappinger were dispatched for a report of a motor vehicle accident in which a vehicle struck people walking on Route 52 near Old Glenham Road in the Town of Fishkill.
An initial investigation revealed that the driver, a 53-year-old Fishkill resident, was driving a 2003 GMC Yukon westbound on Route 52, in the center-turn lane of the three-lane road. The driver failed to observe a mother and her four children attempting to cross the road from the north shoulder and hit all five, police say.
The mother, 28-year-old Zuleyma Lopez, and her 10-month-old child, Abel E. Torres-Lopez, were declared dead at the scene, according to State Police.
Lopez's three other children were transported to Westchester Medical Center. Their conditions weren't released.
The cause of the accident is under investigation. Anyone with information is requested to contact the New York State Police at 845-677-7300.
