Bronx Man Leads Police on High-Speed Chase in Dutchess County

A Bronx man allegedly in possession of drugs is accused of leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase in Dutchess County.

On Wednesday, New York State Police from the Dover Plains barracks arrested 23-year-old Halil Cekaj of Bronx on charges of criminal possession of a controlled substance, reckless, criminal mischief, all felonies; criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle, misdemeanors; unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation; and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.

Around 2:40 a.m., troopers tried to pull over a Volkswagen Jetta on State Route 22 in the town of Pawling.

The driver, Cekaj, is accused of increasing his speed, leading troopers on a chase and crashing his car in the Wassaic area of Amenia.

Cekaj resisted arrest and later kicked and damaged a police car, authorities say.

Cekaj was allegedly found to be in possession of approximately 2.4 grams of cocaine, a small amount of marijuana and a collapsible baton. He was remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
