A popular elementary school in Dutchess County will cease operations at the end of the school year.

In an announcement on their website, St. Mary's Elementary School in Wappingers Falls broke the news to parents on Monday that the Archdiocese of New York has decided to close down the school. The reason for the closure, according to the Archdiocese is the inability to "maintain the operational and financial viability of the school."

St. Peter's Regional School in Liberty has a similar announcement on their website.  They, along with five other schools in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island will be shutting their doors for good this spring.

Schools are preparing parents to start looking for a new place for their children at the start of the 2019-2020 school year. The Archdiocese says that they will reserve a space for current students at any other remaining Catholic elementary schools, but they will need to re-register them at the new school to hold a seat for next year.

Parents with children attending either St. Mary's in Wappingers or St. Peter's in Liberty should contact their school for additional information about the announcement.
