Speeding Impaired Man Jailed For Fatal Accident in Hudson Valley

A man who admitted he was impaired and speeding when he caused a fatal accident was sentenced.

On Thursday in Orange County Court, 24-year-old Andras Geiger of Hungary was sentenced to three to nine years in prison, in connection with a fatal accident.

“This defendant deserved a state prison sentence,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “Deaths caused by impaired drivers are as tragic as they are preventable. There is never an excuse for driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Those who drive while intoxicated place the public, and themselves, at risk of death and other serious harm and must be dealt with severely.”

In October, Geiger pleaded guilty to manslaughter. During his guilty plea, he admitted that he was driving at a fast speed on Pleasant Hill Road in the Town of Cornwall when he failed to negotiate a curve, in March.

As a result, the car left the road and struck a guardrail, causing his passenger to be thrown from the vehicle and killed.

Geiger sustained serious injuries in the collision and was hospitalized for two months at Westchester Medical Center.

An analysis of Geiger’s blood revealed the presence of active metabolites of marijuana and that he had a blood alcohol level of 0.07%, officials say.

The NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit alleged that the car was traveling over 90 mph just before the crash.
