The Putnam County SPCA is asking for help following the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old orange tabby cat named Sheldon. The male cat was fatally shot in the area of Longfellow Drive in Lake Carmel.
Last week, the pet's owner noticed the cat near their home on Longfellow Drive acting normal. Two hours later, the owner found the cat with blood on its face acting in distress.
After rushing the cat to a vet it was determined the cat was shot in the upper palate, causing a fracture. Metal fragmented pieces had been found throughout the skull, police say.
After fragmenting, a large portion of the bullet continued through the upper palate, into the soft tissue of the cat's through and then found its way into the stomach, officials say.
Days later the beloved pet died from the shooting. Due to the fragmentation of the bullet identifying the type of round used is difficult, police say.
A $1,000 reward is being offered by several anonymous donors for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible.
"The fact that a group of separate anonymous donors came forward shows the public's outrage towards this crime," the Putnam County SPCA said in a statement.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Putnam County SPCA at 845-520-6915.
