Minisink High School Student Killed In Car Crash
A Minisink Valley High School student was killed earlier Monday morning following a one-car crash.
State Troopers were on routine patrol on Route 6 in the Town of Wawayanda when they came across an overturned 2001 Honda Civic driven by 17-year-old Mauricio Heredia. He was
extricated from the vehicle. At 5:05 a.m., a member of the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office pronounced him dead on the scene.
State Police tell Hudson Valley Post, Heredia was driving home from working out at Planet Fitness before heading to High School later that morning.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police say initial reports show that Heredia lost control of his vehicle, crossed both lanes of travel, left the roadway on the south shoulder, entered a ditch, and struck a rock which caused the car to overturn.
Foul play is not suspected.
Sadly this marks the second tragic story from the Minisink School District in 2016. In January, Christopher Corwin, a teacher at the Minisink Valley Middle School, was killed in a car crash on his drive to work.
