A Marine raised in the Hudson Valley is one of the 16 who were killed in the military plane crash.

U.S. Marine Corps service member Owen Lennon, 26, from Pomona and 15 others were killed when their aircraft went down in Mississippi earlier this week. Lennon graduated from Ramapo High School in 2008. According this Facebook page he most recently lived in Newburgh.

“The loss of Marine Owen Lennon reminds us again that freedom is never free,” Rockland County Executive Ed Day stated. “This Marine represented the very best that our young people have to offer. He was immensely proud of his service to our nation.”

Lennon and eight others who died in the crash were based at the Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation but officials announced more information regarding the crash.

“Indications are something went wrong at cruise altitude. There is a large debris pattern,” Brig. Gen. Bradley S. James, Commanding General, 4th Marine Aircraft wing said.
