Couples Planning a Barn Wedding in New York Are in For a Rude Awakening
Couples that have decided to hold their reception in a Hudson Valley, New York barn are in for a rude awakening.
Over the last few years barn weddings across New York have become the "in" place to hold wedding receptions. Many New York couples have exchanged the traditional wedding venue for some of the amazing barns that have been transformed across the Hudson Valley to tie the knot.
Hudson Valley Barn Weddings
If haven't heard yet numerous barns in the Hudson Valley have been transformed from the traditional working barn into the place that could make for a perfect wedding reception. There are barns in Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, and Sullivan Counites that have been repurposed to accommodate hundreds of guests. We have some of the Hudson Valley's best barns below but before you scroll down...
Why Are Couples Getting Married Inside Barns in the Hudson Valley?
Most couples that have selected a barn for their reception all have their reasons for going with a barn but the most common answer we've heard is that each couple was looking to have their special day have something different than the traditional wedding hall with a bunch of tables on each side of a dance floor with a bar in the corner.
We've all been to those types of venues and they do serve a purpose but many couples have said those types of places seem "dated" and they wanted to do something different.
Sometimes differences can bring unexpected headaches which is why if you are planning a barn wedding you might be in for a rude awakening!
Grand Entrances Could be Limited
Some of the older wedding venues in New York will allow couples to have their grand entrances including them coming out from underneath the dance floor or the stage (depending on the place) to welcome them for the first time in front of friends and family as husband and wife. Oftentimes the couple's first dance follows the grand entrance. If that's something you'd like to do at your reception a barn isn't for you because we couldn't find one barn that offers the "out of the floor" option.
Not Temperature Controlled or Weatherproof
If a couple is planning to get married in the warmer months most barns don't have air conditioners and if it's cold many of them don't have heating systems. If it rains you and your guests might get wet because some of the repurposed barns have small cracks and gaps in portions of the barn that could lead to some water seeping through.
Nowhere to Plug Things in
Most barns are old and old in this case means that some will only offer a few electric outlets so if you are planning to have live music, a photographer and a bunch of things that need to be plugged in make sure you are aware outlets could come at a premium.
No Restrooms
Most barn venues do NOT have restrooms for guests to use and will require couples to rent portable restrooms for their wedding day. Most barn venues also don't offer a bridal suite for the bridal party to gather before and during the reception.

Bugs Could be a Problem
Most barns have big doors and are wide open and that could lead to spring and summer bugs being a problem so if you are going the barn route make sure you provide bug spray for your guests. If you are looking for a fall wedding venue here are some of the Hudson Valley's best places...
