A busy Hudson Valley intersection could soon be home to the area's newest roundabout.

Drivers across the Hudson Valley know that traffic in some areas can sometimes become unbearable. Most times traffic varies on the time of day but there are some intersections across the Hudson Valley that are worse than others no matter what time of day it is. One of those intersections, located in Ulster County is currently the focus of a new research study to see if a roundabout (traffic circle) would ease traffic and make the accident-prone intersection safer.

One of the highlighted issues in the plan is the traffic and number of accidents that occur at the intersection of Route 9W, Ulster Avenue, and Miron Lane. According to the new plan over 20,000 vehicles use the intersection daily leading to stalled traffic, and numerous accidents. Officials feel that number will rise significantly soon as the IPark 87 complex begins to expand and because of that they are recommending that a new roundabout be installed to replace the current intersection.

The new roundabout (above) would eliminate the traffic signals and prevent drivers from making illegal left-hand turns which often lead to accidents. Town officials are seeking the communities input regarding the proposed roundabout and are asking for comments online here. The full US Route 9W Mobility Plan, along with the full list of 17 changes they are considering to improve traffic in the area can be viewed here.
