One of the last anchor stores left at the Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, New York could be on the move!

It's been well documented that the once thriving Hudson Valley Mall at 1300 Ulster Ave in Kingston, NY has seen better days. When it opened in the 80s it was the only mall in Ulster County and was home to numerous stores including Sears, Kmart, JCPenney, Hess's (which became Filenes and then Macy's), and a Cinema 6 movie theater.

Hudson Valley Mall Ups & Downs

The mall has undergone multiple expansions in its history including adding a food court in the late 80s and welcoming Target and Best Buy in 2001. Those are what some might call the "good days!" Since then the mall, like many malls across the country has seen a mass exit as most of the malls well-known tenants have exited including the majority of the well-known stores including Sears and Macy's.

Currently, the Hudson Valley Mall is home to 14 specialty stores according to Wikipedia, along with two anchor stores.

Anchor Store Leaving Hudson Valley Mall?

Target and Dick's Sporting Goods are the two remaining anchor stores and it appears that Dick's might be the next store to vacate the mall as they are apparently looking to relocate. Dicks, which has called the HV mall location home since its final expansion in 2001 is looking to move out of the mall location and move into the space that was formerly home to Gander Mountain in the nearby Hudson Valley Plaza according to the Daily Freeman.

Dick's Sporting Goods Relocating Kingston, NY Store

Back in May Dick's Sporting Goods submitted plans to the Town of Ulster Planning Board looking to update the buildings façade and make signage changes at the former Gander Mountain location. Gander Mountain moved out of the 53,000-square-foot Hudson Valley Plaza space seven years ago and if Dick's does move it will join other well know stores like Ashley's Furniture and Ollie's Outlets.

Town of Ulster Supervisor James Quigley told the Freeman how happy the town is that Dick's decided to stay in the area instead of closing the store,

"As a supervisor of the town, I'm very thankful they decided to stay in the community and not close the store."

Dick's Sporting Goods is the only remaining sporting goods store in the Kingston area after Modell's, Anaconda, and Sports Authority have all closed in the last eight years.

When Will the Move Happen?

It's unclear when the move will take place if it's approved by the town but when that information becomes available we will update this article.
