Ice Cream Trucks 'Banned' in Parts of Hudson Valley

Ice cream trucks are banned in some Hudson Valley communities.

On Wednesday, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office announced they are cracking down on mobile ice cream vendors in Sullivan County

The news comes in the wake of last year’s fatal accident in which a 4-year-old child was struck and killed by an ice cream truck in Sackett Lake, police say.

“Many summer camps and bungalow colonies have banned ice cream trucks from entering their property”, Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty said. “They just don’t want the liability."

The Sheriff’s Office has fielded several complaints where ice cream truck drivers have ignored posted warnings and entered into the camps anyway, official say.

“We are finding trucks without health department permits, without peddler’s permits and in some cases, suspended driver’s licenses," Chaboty said.

On Tuesday, deputies were called to a bungalow colony on Joyland Road in the Town of Thompson for an alleged trespassing ice cream truck. In that incident, the driver is accused of not possessing a peddlers permit and having several equipment violations on the vehicle. The driver was ticketed and released.

“Our Children’s safety is very important," Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff said. “We will continue to work closely with the community to keep everyone safe."
