A Hudson Valley resident reached out to local police to offer appreciation and gratitude for going above and beyond.

East Fishkill Police posted the handwritten thank you letter to Facebook. “Although we don't expect letters from those we protect and serve, It's always nice to receive them,” the Facebook post read. “I'm extremely proud of all the men and women of this department!”

The unnamed person wrote in the letter that a 60-year-old friend from Westchester County came to hunt in Dutchess County and got lost in the woods.

“When it became clear to me that I would not be able to help lead him out by my own efforts, I was so afraid for him,” the letter stated. “He is not in the best of health and I really thought he could die if he was lost overnight.”

East Fishkill officers Bermugez and Stanis responded and “bravely entered the woods into total darkness, cold and biting wind.”

The officers found the 60-year-old after a mile and a half hike. The officers then led the man through a body of water and back to safety.

“Selfless, brave and honorable come to my mind when I think of the actions of officers Bermugez and Stanis,” the letter added.
