Hudson Valley Man on Heroin Drove 120 MPH on 84, Hit Officer
A Hudson Valley man admitted that he was driving high on heroin when he led police on a wild chase and crashed into a police car.
On Tuesday in Orange County Court, 45-year-old Hector Camacho of Wallkill, pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated assault upon a police officer and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs, both felonies.
On May 18, Camacho led police on high speed chase through the City of Newburgh, Town of Newburgh and Town of New Windsor.
Camacho confessed that he knew police were trying to stop him when he drove his car over 120 miles per hour on Interstate 84 in the opposite lane of traffic. He also admitted to purposely ramming his car into one of the pursuing City of Newburgh police cars, while on State Route 52 in the Town of Newburgh, in an attempt to injure the officer driving the car and evade police.
Camacho also admitted he was driving under the influence of heroin during the high speed chase.
No officers were injured, officials say.
“Those who endanger the police and the rest of community by leading the police on high-speed pursuits must face serious punishment,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “It is fortunate that no police officers or innocent motorists were injured or killed as a result of this defendant’s actions.”
Camacho faces up to seven years in prison when sentenced in January.
