A homeless man from New York City is accused of stealing money, beer, cigarettes, coffee, and more for a number of Newburgh businesses.

Following an extensive investigation by City of Newburgh Police, 37-year-old Omar Maldonado was arrested in connecting with 3 burglaries in the City of Newburgh.

Maldonado told police he is homeless and originally from New York City. “Maldonado had no connection to the City of Newburgh,” Chief Daniel Cameron stated. “And is an example of how one person, not from our community, comes here and wreaks havoc.

Police say all of the burglaries occurred overnight. They occurred at a grocery store and beer distributor, both on Broadway, and a First Street corner store.

Maldonado allegedly entered the establishments by forcing himself through glass windows or doors. He’s accused of stealing money, phone cards, cigarettes, and even a cup of coffee.

Authorities recovered most of the stolen items from two of the allegedly burglaries. Maldonado is building held in City of Newburgh prison pending his arraignment in City of Newburgh Court.
