Forest Rangers Save Number of Hudson Valley Hikers

Local forest rangers helped a number of lost or injured Hudson Valley hikers.

Recently, the Department of Environmental Conservation was told that a hiker was injured between Slide and Cornell mountains in the Slide Mountain Wilderness.

The call contacted Ulster County 911 and provided coordinates. With the help of a New York State helicopter, a ranger arrived on the scene.

The injured hiker was located and evaluated. He was then airlifted from the mountain and transported to a hospital.

Later that evening, a hiker contacted the DEC Central Dispatch from the Ridge Trail on Balsam Lake Mountain. The man said he was lost and was hoping a ranger could help him.

Ranger David Meade called the hiker, confirmed his location and determined that the man and his friends were not equipped to continue hiking due to darkness.

Ranger Nathaniel Shea arrived on the scene with head lamps, found the hikers and assisted them out of the woods.
