City of Poughkeepsie Fire confirmed on Facebook a seven-story building collapsed with a possible second building collapse involved Monday afternoon. The buildings are located at the corner of Cannon Street and Academy Street in the City of Poughkeepsie.
The fire department was on the scene and had received reports of multiple people possibly trapped inside.
ABC reported a search-and-rescue operation was underway with reports of people trapped and first responders searching through rubble for victims.
According to ABC, a seven-story building located at 19 Academy Street partially collapsed and fell onto 17 and 15 Academy Street, causing 15 Academy Street, a three-story building, to also collapse.
At least one person, a woman, was trapped inside 15 Academy, ABC reported. The woman was conscious as first responders tried to free her.
Rotanya Hargrove, 43, was trapped for several hours but was pulled out of the rubble alive.
"I commend the heroic first responders whose swift response saved the life of a woman trapped by the building collapse in Poughkeepsie," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "While I am relieved that it appears no lives were lost by this tragedy, my thoughts and prayers are with the woman who was hurt."
As of this writing, it's unclear what caused the initial building to collapse but some believe severe weather is to blame.
