What to Do With Your Eclipse Glasses When its Over in New York
It's happened and now many of us are wondering what should we do with our special solar eclipse glasses.
If you were lucky enough to get a pair of the special glasses that many of us were searching for to safely view the solar eclipse have you thought about what you're going to do with them now that the eclipse is over?
Now that the eclipse has passed there are a few organizations that are hoping folks will donate their eclipse glasses to be reused instead of throwing them out in the trash. If you spend any time scrolling through social media you've probably come across a few posts that show organizations asking you to donate your glasses to them so that they can be reused in other parts of the world for future eclipses.
Are Legit Company's Asking for Your Solar Eclipse Glasses?
Numerous organizations are asking for your glasses donation but unfortunately, we can't be sure if all the organizations are legit or not. For example, there's one company that has a picture circulating on social media asking everyone to send their glasses to them so that they can be sent to children in Latin America for the eclipse happening in August 2024. Eclipse Glasses USA is asking anyone willing to send glasses to send them to a PO Box address they provided in the picture.
They asked that everyone make sure to send their glasses to them by August 1st "so they can be sent to the kids before the eclipse." The only problem is there isn't an eclipse scheduled to happen in August according to experts, which has led some to wonder if it's legit or not. We've searched to try and gather more information on the company but were unable to confirm if it's a real company or not.
How to Recycle Solar Eclipse Glasses in New York
If you are interested in recycling your glasses and to be on the safe side we would suggest donating them to Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) a non-profit organization that is holding its second nationwide eclipse glasses recycling drive according to USA Today. AWB is planning to collect and ship millions of repurposed glasses to underserved communities around the world for future solar eclipses.

This year they have over 300 schools, museums, city governments, commercial businesses, community organizations, and local libraries joining in but it doesn't look like there are many places to donate in New York. The only places we could find in New York to donate to AWB are at Warby Parker locations as they are the National drop-off business this year. They have locations in Sloatsburg, White Plains, and more. Find a location near you here.
