Police: Hudson Valley Man Found With Arsenal of Assault Rifles

After a two-week investigation police say a Hudson Valley man was found with a dangerous collection of high capacity rifles.

On Thursday, State Police at Middletown executed a search warrant at a residence in the Town of Wawayanda that resulted in the recovery of a large number of weapons and ammunition.

A 2-week investigation determined 39-year-old Norwell Therien of Middletown illegally possessed weapons, along with marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms, police say.

Authorities allegedly found five assault rifles that included an Uzi with a fifty round magazine and a Calico 9mm rifle with a 100 round high capacity magazine. Two AK 47 variant rifles, each with 100 round drum magazines and a bump-stock that fit the AK 47 rifles.

According to State Police, 11 illegally possed rifles, 32 high capacity magazines that fit assault rifles and pistols, a Glock 9mm,  thousands of rounds of ammunition, one pound of marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms were also found.

One of the rifles was stolen from Rockland County, officials say.

Therien was charged with 6 counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal possession of marijuana, all felonies.

He was also charged with 11 counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, 32 counts of possession of a high capacity ammunition feeding device, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a controlled, misdemeanors.

Therien was arraigned in the Town of Wawayanda Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $150,000 cash bail or $300,000 secured bond.
