One person is dead after he was run over by cars on the New York State Thruway in the Hudson Valley, which forced the highway to be shut down for several hours.

The accident happened on Sunday at 1:21 a.m., in the northbound lanes of I-87 just past exit 17 in Newburgh. A New York State Police spokesperson confirmed the victim was a man and police believe he was hit by multiple vehicles.

There's no word on why the man was walking on I-87. Two vehicles were pulled over by police near the accident, according to Rockland Video.

The northbound lanes of the Thruway were shut down for much of the overnight hours at Exit 16 in Harriman.
