Orange County Man Jailed for Shooting Teen During Robbery Attempt

An Orange County man who shot and tried to rob a teen, in an attempt to feed his drug addiction, will serve jail time.

Wednesday in Orange County Court, 26-year-old Matthew Bauman, of Harriman was sentenced to 11 years in prison and five years post-release supervision.

The jail sentence stems from a Nov. 2015 attempted robbery and shooting of an 18-year-old outside a Harriman deli. Bauman pled guilty to attempted robbery in April.

As part of his guilty plea, Bauman admitted he stole his father’s handgun and went to the Quick Stop Deli on River Road in the Village of Harriman to commit a robbery to support his heroin addiction. Bauman confessed he confronted an 18-year-old man outside the deli and displayed a handgun.

When the victim, Aron Weiss of Kiryas Joel, fled Bauman shot him in the back of shoulder.

Officials say the bullet traveled from the man’s shoulder and through his arm. The victim’s injuries were not life-threatening. Weiss was treated and released at Westchester Medical Center.

“Our streets will be that much safer during the decade that this defendant will be in state prison,” Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said in a statement. “Tragically, this case once again demonstrates how drug addiction fuels much of the violence that plagues our communities. I am thankful that the injuries suffered by the victim in this case were not more severe.”
