Sadly, 2024 has brought to light several animal hoarding situations that have required intervention from local animal rescues and agencies.

Just last month, 22 'fearful' Great Danes were found to be living in terrible conditions in Dutchess County following their owner's death. The Ulster County SPCA shared the details of one of the "worst hoarding cases" they've ever seen. The dogs were found in Milan, NY, and in addition to the UCSPCA, several additional Hudson Valley-based animal rescues helped to save the 22 large breed dogs.

SPCA Cat Rescue Underway In White Plains

In what's being referenced as 'a horrific hoarding rescue' in White Plains, agencies are working around the clock to trap, treat, and care for close to 40 'terrified' cats and kittens said to be living in filth and garbage.

The Westchester SPCA indicated that their 'cat team is currently boots on the ground in White Plains' following an urgent call to the Humane Law Enforcement Unit that stemmed from a concerned neighbor contacting a landlord about a 'deathly smell' in an apartment building.

Our officers quickly responded and so far have discovered nearly 40 terrified cats living in filth and garbage. All of the cats are dehydrated and most are sick and suffering with severe upper respiratory and eye infections. One of the cats just gave birth to a single tiny kitten who is clinging to life and was found on the cold floor, living in mounds of feces.

On February 13th, the SPCA shared that rescue efforts were underway, with food and water stations set up at the residence in an attempt to capture all the felines.

While it’s hard to assess how many more cats could be living in the ceiling and furniture, our team will not stop until every single one is rescued. All of these poor felines have been neglected for far too long and desperately need medical care, as well as time, to recover both physically and emotionally.

An update was provided on February 14th saying that the team was still working to rescue the three dozen plus cats found in these deplorable conditions.

Consider Donating To Help Rescued White Plains Cats

With a rescue effort of this capacity, and the condition that many of these felines were found in, naturally the cost of care is hefty.

The Westchester SPCA is asking for a 'gift at any level' in order to support care and rehab for these cats and kittens, which they are expecting to cost thousands at this point. Contributions will also help to fund the SPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit, 'who receives no government funding' to care for animals in Westchester County.

At this time no additional details have been released regarding the identity of the residents of the apartment or any arrests following the hoarding situation's discovery. We will update when more information becomes available.

My Accidental Wappingers Falls Cat Colony

20 cats later...I accidentally created a cat colony (and the occasional raccoon and opossum) at my house by putting out food. Oops.
