Over the past several years, especially the last four or so when the pandemic hit local businesses pretty hard, we've sadly become kind of accustomed to our favorite local spots shutting their doors.

Recently, many Hudson Valley residents have been trying to figure out what's been going on at a popular, and somewhat new, Mexican restaurant in a prominent Poughkeepsie location that appears to have suddely closed.

El Toro Loco - Closed For Good?

Though their website still indicates that they are open seven days a week (and Google notes that customers should be aware they may have adjusted hours this weekend due to Easter), all signs are pointing towards closed at El Toro Loco in Poughkeepsie. Going out almost as quietly as they came in, recent calls to the Poughkeepsie restaurant have gone unanswered, and my most recent attempt went to some sort of answering machine without even ringing.

After the previous restaurant at 1955 South Road closed, El Toro Loco moved in without any big fanfare, and then during summer 2021 gave the exterior a major facelift before officially opening, and now, it seems like they've unofficially closed? No signs on the door, no social media activity, just a quiet closure for those on the outside looking in.

Recently another local spot did the same, a very popular Hopewell pizza shop seemingly vanished.

Before El Toro Loco There Was.....

Prior to El Toro Loco's somewhat short run, another restaurant operated, also for not very long, at the same location. It did not serve up Mexican favorites, and some people were not all that pleased with the theming of this particular spot, as the attire for the restaurant staff got a lot of attention. Do you remember The Tilted Kilt?

Though the Tilted Kilt is a chain, there aren't any local locations, at least not within a 50 mile radius to us here in the Hudson Valley. Branded as more than just a restaurant and sports bar, the Tilted Kilt advertises themselves as having a festive atmosphere and home to the 'World Famous Tilted Kilt Girls®.'

And Before Tilted Kilt?

If we rewind back even further, who can remember the good ol' days of 'kissing the moose' for any birthday celebration at Poughkeepsie's Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse. I had my fair share of birthday celebrations there, balloon animals included, and remember being devastated when they closed up shop for good.
