Parts of the New York State Thruway are closed as State Police are investigating an unusual accident involving a tractor-trailer hauling an excavator.

New York State Police have closed parts of the northbound lanes of Interstate-87 after a part of a tractor-trailer landed on the highway.

According to an State Police investigation, around 8:55 a.m. a 1995 Peterbilt tractor-trailer transporting an excavator struck the Hungry Hollow Bridge overpass in the village of Chestnut Ridge. The accident caused the excavator to fall off the construction vehicle and land on the Thruway.

Police have identified the driver as 59-year-old Steven R. Canfield, of Monroe. Police say he was not injured during the crash. At this time Troopers have not reported any injuries.

Due to the accident and investigation, police closed some northbound lands on I-87 between between Exit 14 in Nanuet and 14A in Chestnut Ridge.

The accident is still under investigation and more information may be released later.
