Hudson Valley Man Steals Military Jacket Because Other Person ‘Disrespected Military’
A Hudson Valley man claims he stole another person’s military jacket because he was disrespecting the military by wearing the jacket.
On Saturday around 5 p.m., Saugerties Police responded to the area of Mirabella’s Restaurant on Partition Street for a report of a robbery.
A 22-year-old man told officers that another man confronted him, demanded his military jacket, took the jacket and went into Mirabella’s with it.
Inside Mirabella’s, 31-year-old Edward Kovacs of Saugerties allegedly told officials that he took the other man’s jacket.
According to Saugerties police, Kovacs told them he was sitting in Mirabella’s, when he noticed the man walk by in full military garb. Having served in the military, Kovacs confronted the military jacket wearing man, wondering if the man had served.
Kovacs told detectives that he couldn’t understand what the man was saying and assumed he was drunk. Kovacs then said he told the victim to take the jacket off. He later pulled the jacket off the victim, police say.
Kovacs told police that he thought the man was disrespecting the military, according to the Saugerties Police Department.
Kovacs was charged with petit larceny, a misdemeanor. He was released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Village of Saugerties Court on June 12.
