5 Injured In Orange County Fire, 2 In Critical Condition
Two people are in critical condition following a four-alarm fire in Orange County, three others were injured.
Tuesday around 1 a.m., Firefighters from all over the local area responded to a fire at the Crestwood Apartments on Fitzgerald Drive in Wallkill. Emergency responders were told there were people trapped inside.
Upon arrival, units encountered heavy fire conditions on the 1st and 2nd floor with a victim hanging from the 2nd floor window. The victim soon jumped, the Silver Lake Fire District said.
Sleet and freezing rain made it difficult for crews to battle the flames. Sever icing and a hydrant that wasn’t working properly also made it difficult to extinguish the fire, officials say.
Gina Marie Faricelli, 57, and 62-year-old Tonya Picket, 62, are both listed in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of Orange Regional Medical Center. Both are being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
Samuel Cuellarquevedo, 88, is in stable condition at ORMC where he is being treated for chest pains.
Kevin Sloan and Maria Cardenas were both treated and released with minor injuries.
Eighteen apartments were destroyed, leaving most residents displaced.
The Orange County Fire Investigation Team is investigating possible careless smoking as the cause of the fire.
