Just after Christmas emergency officials from Ulster County were able to save a woman who police believe was overdosing.

On Sunday December 27th around 2:30 p.m. New Paltz Police responded to an unconscious and unresponsive female in the Town of New Paltz. Thanks to the responding officers training and experience the office was immediately able to realize the woman was likely suffering from a heroin overdose.

The officers on scene took life saving measures and administered Narloxone, commonly referred to as Narcan, a medication used to reverse the effects of opioids especially in overdose. Shortly after administering the Narloxone, the unnamed woman regained consciousness.  The patient was then transported to a local hospital for further treatment.

According to a release from New Paltz Chief of Police Joseph Snyder, New Paltz Police have been carrying and trained on how to use Narloxone since 2014. In that short time period New Paltz Police believe that using Narloxone has help save 8 lives.
