Terrifying ‘Dual Threat’ Places Hudson Valley, New York School on Lockdown
School officials received reports of an armed person in the school and a bomb threat. At the same time!
On Monday around 12:23 p.m. the S. S. Seward Institute in Florida received what school officials called a "dual-threat." The high school received multiple phone calls outlining the threat of an armed person in the building and a subsequent threat of a bomb placed in the building.
"We immediately activated our lockdown procedures which shifted to an evacuation as the threat evolved," S. S. Seward Institute Superintendent of Schools Larry J. Leaven told the community.
Law enforcement agencies from Florida, Warwick, Orange County Sheriff, New York State Troopers, Village of Chester, Town of Chester, and Woodbury all responded to the school.
A command center was set up, led by the Florida Police Department and State Troopers, and an immediate search, and sweep of the building commenced. No firearms or incendiary devices were found, officials say.
Everyone in the school and all bags were checked by law enforcement. Nothing was found.
Then students and staff were escorted out of the building and evacuated to the Orange County Sports Club while police checked the building.
After bomb-sniffing dogs searched the building the school was deemed safe.
"All threats to our school or students are taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. We wanted you to have the facts so you can discuss them with your child and emphasize the seriousness of this issue. If you discover anything that can assist in the investigation, please contact us immediately," Leaven added. "Counselors and other personnel will be available if any students or staff would like to talk to someone about this event."
There will be an increased police presence around the school this week.
"I want to thank our students and staff for their quick and decisive action. Everyone stayed calm and made the absolute best of a difficult situation," Leaven said.
